It’s probably best not to think about how August is already coming to a close, that the kids are getting ready to head back to school (or may already be there), and wonder where the summer went. That’s not good for anyone’s state of mind. But don’t worry. Just because summer slipped away like sand through an hourglass, that doesn’t mean you’re out of time. There’s still plenty of opportunity for family fun and adventures.
Part of the benefit of a city like Portland is that we never have any dearth of activities. We live in a lovely place and it’s prime time to round up the family, get out, and enjoy it. With that in mind, here are a few fun things to do with the brood. And no, this is not even close to an exhaustive list. There’s too much to do and too much to see for a single post, but these are some of our favorites.
Take A Hike…
…or a swim or a kayaking trip or a…the list could go on and on. And this should be a no-brainer. One of the biggest perks of living where we live is that it’s gorgeous, especially this time of year. Outdoor activities also combine a variety of great qualities. Depending on which one we’re talking about, they’re usually cheap. Most of the family can come along. And they almost all involve exercise. It’s a win all around.
Take in a Game
What better time of year to take in a game and enjoy the weather? As the Trail Blazers have yet to get rolling, it’s a big soccer time for us. The Portland Timbers are making a push towards the playoffs and have upcoming matches, including against I-5 rivals, the Seattle Sounders. On the women’s side, the Thorns still have a few games left this season.
Looking for a bit of culture and a way to sneak in a bit of education for the kids before school starts? Our city happens to be home to some world-class museums, most of which are air-conditioned if things outside are a little too warm.
Do you kids love fantastic creatures of all varieties? What better place to see them in real life than at the zoo? Visiting the zoo is a triple threat. You have the chance to enjoy the weather and get the family some exercise, it’s an educational trip whether the kids admit it or not, and it instills a sense of awe and wonder at the natural world. And you get to check out some adorable critters to boot.
Go Out For Ice Cream
Simple, easy, classic. Not to mention, seasonally appropriate, delicious, and a perfect family outing. In this town, if you can’t find a fantastic ice cream shop at least relatively close to your location, you’re not really looking hard enough. There’s at least one in pretty much every neighborhood, and it’s a great way to beat the heat and spend a family afternoon.
These are just a few of the many, many things to do during the summer in Portland. You can find everything from grand adventures to chill, low-key afternoons. If you’re after a memorable time before the kids head back to school, all you have to do is look and use your imagination.
